Collective Care in the Face of State-Sanctioned Violence: Lessons from Latin America
In times of repression and state-sanctioned violence, how do communities sustain care, solidarity, and safety? This workshop explores lessons from Latin American movements, focusing on collective care as a practice of resistance and survival.
The session will begin with a talk by Zia Kandler, a seasoned human rights accompanier with over a decade of experience in community-led safety strategies. Drawing from her work across Latin America, Zia will share insights into how communities have developed collective protection mechanisms in the face of violence.
Following the presentation, participants will engage in a reflective and creative exploration of how these lessons resonate within our own contexts. Through guided discussion and interactive exercises, we will explore practices for collective care in our everyday lives, institutions, and movements.
This workshop is designed for university students, faculty, and organizers interested in human rights, social movements, and transformative justice. It offers a space to critically reflect, imagine alternatives, and deepen our collective commitment to care as a form of resistance.
